Cookie Policy
01 — What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by a website. They are widely used to make websites work, remember your preferences, and gather analytics about how visitors interact with a site.
Montgomery Research Labs uses local storage (not traditional cookies) to store your consent preferences. Local storage behaves similarly to cookies but is never transmitted with HTTP requests, keeping your preferences entirely on your device.
02 — What We Store
| Key | Type | Purpose | Basis | Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
mrl_consent_v1 | Local storage | Stores your cookie consent choices (functional, analytics, marketing), timestamp, and a random consent ID | Until cleared by you |
03 — Cookie Categories
| Category | Basis | Description | Can opt out? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Functional | Essential for the site to operate — navigation, forms, layout. Includes the consent preference record itself. | No — required for basic site functionality | |
| Analytics | Aggregated, anonymised usage data collected via Umami. Cookieless — no personal data stored. Helps us understand which tools engineers find most useful. | Yes — toggle off at any time | |
| Marketing | Currently unused. Reserved for potential future features. No marketing cookies are set. | Yes — will require opt-in before use |
04 — Umami Analytics (Cookieless)
When analytics consent is granted, we load a script from our self-hosted Umami instance. Umami is designed from the ground up for privacy:
- No cookies are used — ever
- No personal data (name, email, IP address) is collected or stored
- No cross-site tracking or fingerprinting
- Data is stored on infrastructure we control, not shared with third parties
- All data is aggregated — individual user sessions are not retained
- Fully compliant with GDPR, CCPA, PECR
The analytics script is loaded dynamically only after you grant consent and is immediately removed if you withdraw consent during a session.
05 — Third-Party Scripts
We do not load any third-party advertising scripts, social media trackers, or remarketing pixels. The only external script loaded is the Umami analytics script, which is only activated with your consent and operates without cookies.
06 — Managing Your Preferences
You can update your cookie preferences at any time:
- Via the banner: Click “Manage Preferences” in the cookie banner that appears on your first visit
- Via the footer link: Click “Privacy Settings” in the site footer to reopen the preference manager
- Via your browser: Clear local storage for this site in your browser's developer tools (Application → Local Storage) to reset all preferences
Changes take effect immediately. Withdrawing analytics consent will unload the analytics script within the current page session.
07 — Browser-Level Controls
Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies and local storage through their settings. Note that blocking all local storage may prevent the consent banner from remembering your choices, causing it to reappear on each visit.
08 — Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy when we add new features or change how we use data. Material changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date above. Where required by law, we will re-request consent for new processing activities.
